They certainly have a more informal way of doing things in Aus/NZ, and even more so in the Northern Territory by the sounds of it. In some parts of NZ flip flops would be overdressed – no shoes is the norm!

That’s funny! However maybe he asked to have ‘MUM’ tattooed on his face and the tattooist couldn’t spell… ‘Sorry bro, it’s just a typo’.

I was giving evidence in a murder case in Darwin, in the Northern Territory in Australia. After an early morning start and a long flight, we arrived at Darwin Airport and were met by the local police. They suggested we should go to our hotel via the court to see where things were up to. I was dressed for Darwin’s climate – skirt, t-shirt, flipflops, and when we got to the court they said, now you’re here, you might as well go in. I asked them to take me to the hotel so I could get into my court gear. They looked me up and down and said, “This is Darwin, you’re over-dressed as it is.”
